PES elects 3 trustees for 2020-2021

Members of the Philippine Economic Society (PES) elected three individuals to sit as members of the Board of Trustees for the next two years:

  • Sarah Lynne S. Daway-Ducanes, University of the Philippines
  • Rosemarie G. Edillon, National Economic and Development Authority
  • Philip Arnold P. Tuaño, Ateneo de Manila University

The elections were held from 31 October to 07 November 2019, and the results were announced at the closing of the 57th PES Annual Meeting and Conference at the Novotel Manila, Araneta Center, Quezon City.

Trade department lays out plans for onset of advanced manufacturing

GOVERNMENT agencies are proposing programs to address job losses caused by the possible contraction of the manufacturing sector due to increased automation, officials said at an economic forum.

Representatives from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) disclosed the plans at a Philippine Economic Society forum Thursday.

The slow recovery of hunger

Poverty and hunger, even though related, have had different historical trends in the Philippines.

Since 1983, there have been 124 SWS national surveys of Self-Rated Poverty (SRP) among households; they have been quarterly since 1992. SRP has trended generally downward, along a very rocky road. From a peak of 74 percent in 1985, it subsided to the low 40s this year (“The full poverty picture,” Opinion, 10/26/19).

Bicol Economics Congress highlights pedagogy, research for development

More than 150 stakeholders in the Bicol region took part in the inaugural Bicol Economics Congress (BEC) held in Legazpi City, Albay on 29-30 August 2019.

The two-day Congress, attended by practitioners, educators, and students of economics from 22 participating institutions, highlighted the importance of pedagogy, research, and engagement as factors in regional economic development.

‘Never waste a good crisis’

There has been much hand-washing among our legislators on TRAIN 1. The unfortunate part about this is they were responding to fake news.

Much of this is likely limbic (also referred to as lizard and “fight or flight”) thinking which has sadly characterized much of discourse lately, fanned by social media and live news. Tweets, live feeds, and text messages or phone calls for instant reactions. They discourage deliberate thought grounded on evidence and serious research, which at the same time educate the public.
