How can the Philippines leverage technologies to realize inclusive and sustainable growth and development goals? This issue will be addressed by policy- and decision-makers, academics, industry leaders, and private sector representatives at the 57th Annual Meeting and Conference of the Philippine Economic Society (PES) on 7 November 2019 at Novotel Manila, Araneta Center, Quezon City.
The conference, with the theme “Rethinking Development Strategies: Integrating Technology, Promoting Competitiveness, Reinvigorating Industries,” will reexamine current development paradigms in light of advances in digitalization, computing, and artificial intelligence. Such advances are expected to reverberate throughout the macroeconomy, influencing the evolution, conduct, and performance of firms, spurring changes in technology and economic policies, and affecting household welfare outcomes.
Undersecretary Rafaelita Aldaba, who heads the Competitiveness and Innovation Group of the Department of Trade and Industry, is set to deliver the opening keynote remarks, which will highlight the need for a new industrial policy to better adapt new technologies to achieve industrial development. Her presentation will be followed by a plenary discussion on the conference theme featuring Undersecretary Rosemarie Edillon of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), Dr. Eli Remolona of the Asia School of Business, Ms. Marilou Uy of the Intergovernmental Group of Twenty-Four on International Monetary Affairs and Development, and Ms. Minette Navarrete of Kickstart Ventures, Inc.
The second plenary session, organized by NEDA, will look into emerging metrics to quantify the economic impacts and costs of climate change. This is in line with the theme of Economic and Financial Literacy Week 2019, “Our Planet’s Health, The Future’s Wealth,” which will be celebrated on 4-8 November 2019.
To cap off the morning activities, the De La Salle University (DLSU) will hold a plenary session focusing on issues in research and methodologies in light of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the ASEAN Economic Integration.
Parallel sessions in the afternoon will cover a wide range of economic concerns, including innovation and technological change, digital economies, international trade, capital flows, human capital and education, poverty, household economics, agriculture and natural resources, and institutions and policy.
The closing plenary session will be headlined by the Philippine Competition Commission (PCC). This session will delve into the unique role of competition policy in a globalized world grappling with the consequences of rapid technological progress, inequality, and heightened populism.
PES annual conferences are held every second week of November as part of its observation of the Economic and Financial Literacy Week, which is mandated under Republic Act No. 10922. PES is expected to lead private sector efforts in improving the level of economic and financial understanding of the Filipino public.
